MindWar Nick Hall Book 3 eBook Douglas E Richards
I must repeat here what I've said about all of Douglas E. Richards' other novels. This book is not science fiction per se but rather is brilliantly based on actual technologies that are, for the most part, presently envisioned but not yet realized. In this book, Richards takes brain-embedded computer chips designed to access the internet to another level: mind reading on a larger scale than one individual (Nick Hall). Compromise of both technologies by evil doers leads to catastrophic consequences only someone as creative as this author could conceive. Douglas Richards' presentations never cease to be captivating, and many sequences are real nail-biters. I'll admit I did find the plots to be considerably more complicated than in Richards' previous novels, not in their technology but just in themselves, with several interacting characters having different agendas and mental defects ranging from warped to downright insane. Yet the plots are arguably well worth the reader's effort to follow. Finally, this book is a superb follow-up to Game Changer but can certainly be enjoyed as a stand-alone work. And I strongly suspect we'll be hearing a lot more about Victor, Browning, Bostic, the ESP recipe, and Nazry in Douglas Richards' next book.

MindWar Nick Hall Book 3 eBook Douglas E Richards Reviews
My review is for all three books of the series - "Mind's Eye", "Brain Web", and "Mind War".
These are the first books from Douglas Richards that I've read, after a friend recommended "Mind's Eye". The series is a near-future techno-thriller - not sci-fi per se. These are a "what if" story - "What if someone accidentally got the ability to completely read minds? Surface thoughts, deep memories, the whole mind an open book?" How would that person get through their day, having everyone's thoughts - good, bad, disgusting, etc - shoved into their head day in and day out? That's the underlying premise of the books, and Richards has obviously given it some thought.
This is "thinking man" sci-fi at it's best, taking current technology, looking forward a bit, and projecting how it might affect an individual and the world at large.
I found the characters to be believable, if a little stiff. Not enough to throw me off of the story, though. I enjoyed the thought-provoking plot, the world building, the very believable technology, and the pace of the books. (I read them in quick succession).
If you like thought-provoking sci-fi, give this series a try.
There are only two things you need to know prior to reading Douglas E Richards new tecno-thriller "Mind War".
Firstly - if you haven't read a novel by Richards before, strap yourself in and hang on tight, as you are in for an absolute thrill ride from beginning to end.
Secondly - take the next day off work so you can sleep, as this book will keep you up all night needing to know what happens next!
Although this is officially the third novel by Richards with lead character Nick Hall, it is a definite "stand alone" as I mentioned in my headline, and does not need to be read as a third installment as you may expect with many other series. It will, however, make you want to read the first two if you haven't already!
The twists, the turns, the back story, the side stories, ....every single aspect of this book makes you want to just keep turning pages right from the word go. Unfortunately, you do eventually get to the end.........and it just leaves you wanting more, which I am sure Richards has the ability to deliver in spades.
All of the characters involved draw you in completely - especially for me, the ones designed specifically for the reader to "love to hate"!
From the amazingly loyal and patriotic mind reading marine biologist who routinely saves so many innocent people he should wear a cape, the arms dealer who is more true to his word than Superman (yet will never take betrayal lightly), to a psychotic genius with a god complex, you cant help but be completely immersed in each an every moment and character this story has to offer.
Richards once again proves he is one of the most ingenious and entertaining writers of this genre, taking the techno-thriller to new extremes. I'd actually go so far to say Richards, in my opinion, is one of the finest fiction writers of his generation.
I thoroughly recommend this book to all who love a fast paced, action packed thriller with conceptual science so well researched and written, you'd think it was already a reality.
This, the third of the Nick Hall series, has the same qualities as the previous two it's a thriller, moved along with enough changes in the path of the story to make most heads spin. The character support for the story is dependent upon in-depth constructions of Hall, the main protagonist, and Victor, the primary villain. To his credit, Mr.. Richards portrays the villain with as much richness of character as he does Hall, which has the effect of enabling many plot twists that would otherwise be difficult to justify.
Crafting of the story aside, I would be remiss if I didn't praise the amount of research Mr. Richards devotes to his settings, both geographical and technological. He describes places I know with satisfying fidelity, and this gives me confidence that the settings I don't have personal experience with are as he portrays them. It is similar with technology the entities I know about are confirmed by in depictions, thereby providing me with education about those of which I have not yet heard. I find this style most satisfying to read.
Let me note, without risking spoilers, that Mr. Richards has left the endings of his previous Nick Hall novels at least slightly open to extension. This one is no exception to that practice; I expect there will be another Nick Hall novel sometime in the future.
I must repeat here what I've said about all of Douglas E. Richards' other novels. This book is not science fiction per se but rather is brilliantly based on actual technologies that are, for the most part, presently envisioned but not yet realized.
