First I'd like to point out that all the reviews for this book (Killashandra) and the first in the series (Crystal Singer) are mixed up together on these item pages, very odd and I'm sure confusing for newcomers. Just a warning if you haven't read either book yet.I adored the first book. As a main character, Killashandra was a revelation to me. I had always scoffed at the idea of reading McCaffrey as a younger person interested in 'serious' books and had no idea she wrote such liberated female characters. Glad I overcame my prejudice! I loved that Killa was rather self-centered, ambitious and emotionally cold and made no apologies for it. It felt very unique to me and I was totally engrossed in her rise through the Crystal Singer ranks.
The second book has let me down in this regard. The world is interesting as well as the plot but much of the book is taken up with a romance that I found not only dull but out-of-character for the Killashandra I admired in the first book. If her interest in her kidnapper had been tainted with a bit of 'utilitarianism' like her romance with the Guild Master in book one I would have found it less bothersome. But it isn't. Much of it is just straight out of a Harlequin, which makes me wonder with some disappointment how intentional the qualities were that I admired in the first book. Maybe McCaffrey was reacting to some criticism of her icy main character? (I notice even now in these reviews some people don't like her.) If so I wish she had stuck to her guns.
I'll still read the third and other McCaffrey in the future. But what I'd really like to do even now while I'm typing this is re-read the first book and enjoy it again...

Killashandra Crystal Singer Trilogy Anne McCaffrey Michael Whelan 9780345316004 Books Reviews
"Killashandra thought her world had ended when she was told she would never become a concert singer. And then she met the stranger from off-world.
He said he was a Crystal Singer - one of the unique ones of the Galaxy - and when Killashandra tried to find out what a Crystal Singer was the answers were vague, obscure. All she could discover was that they were special people, shrouded in mystery, and danger, and beauty - and something altogether incomprehensible.
It was then that she decided that she too must try and become a Crystal Singer."
I love that Anne McCaffrey created a new world, a character that I can identify with, and a story worth telling. Its a tale about not getting what you strive for and discovering that life continues and that new goals can replace old ones.
Crystal Singer Series are my favourite books by Anne McCaffrey - definitely five stars and worth reading more than once.
As a long time fan of Anne McCaffrey and her Dragonriders of Pern epic, I was eager to read another book by her. Crystal Singer was a great read. The story languishes some in the narrative or first person account of the protagonist Killashandra. Other readers may not see this. The story is interesting, imaginative and filled with twists and turns. I was not disappointed. Now, I am moving on to the other books in this story line.
Read all three books in the series as a whole book and get glimpses of other series from the same universe. The Ship Who Sang, Sassinak, Dinosaur Planet Survivors, and they’ll lead you to more of this authors great stories. Equally a favorite with The Dragonriders Of Pern series. A young intelligent woman starting out on a great adventure to find her place in the universe, finds more than she expected, a little danger, a great love, and wisdom achieved.
This series of books has always been favorites of mine from years past. Anne McCaffery has a very vivid way of portraying worlds totally independent of the horrors our world endures and lets us glimpse into new settings and ideas with compelling characters and concepts. All of her book, whether singing crystal or riding the dragons of Pern to ships who are sentient … her ability to take you away and make you reevaluate life as it could and often should be. Highly recommend all of her books.
After the Dragon Riders series of novels, this is, in my opinion, one of Anne McCaffrey's best series. I have to be honest here ... this is actually a replacement for the first copy I'd owned (purchased when it first came out in paperback). I've read it so many times, the book was falling apart! When I decided to read it again, I ordered a new copy.
This is the story of Killashandra Ree who suffers a terrible disappointment in her life. She subsequently discovers the Heptite Guild and embarks on a new and incredibly dangerous career.
Anne McCaffrey builds characters who are complex, yet strong. Killashandra is no exception. We feel her bitter defeat that leads to her leaving her home planet. We feel her uncertainties as she enters into her new life with the Heptite Guild. As a reader, I easily become immersed into the worlds that Ms. McCaffrey creates and feel close to the characters of Killashandra and those around her.
If you have read and loved other McCaffrey novels, you will enjoy "Crystal Singer" just as much, if not more. If you have not read any of her works, this is an excellent trilogy to jump in to. "Crystal Singer", "Killashandra Ree" and "Crystal Line" are not to be missed.
